Opposing Forces

Objective:

A title sequence forThe Moth podcast, “Opposing Forces.”

Concept:

“Opposing Forces” is a true story. A nurse named Martha is held at gunpoint and forced to perform intensive oral surgery on a terrorist commander’s son. The sequence is a journey that represents Martha’s state of mind. When I listened to the podcast, I felt the struggle in Martha’s words as she felt fear and vulnerability. Throughout events, her words turn into strength and power.

The turning point in the storyline is what I want to represent in my narrative. Text becomes the main character as they flow into different parts that form the environment that surrounds Martha. Later on, these texts form two different hands that represent the conflicting thoughts going through her mind as she realizes the blurred line between good and evil.

Highlights:

Creating a title sequence for the first time taught me the critical importance of visual hierarchy and cohesive compositing. Through this process, I learned how to arrange visual elements to guide the viewer's eye and maintain narrative flow.

Process:

I initially sketched out each frame and adjusted accordingly to the flow of the sequence. I used a lot of reference images so that I can get a feel of how I can make flowing text have volume. Along with creating text, I also photo composited similar textured buildings to create environmental elements. I also used images of my hand as a reference so that I can write text within the illustrated hand.
